Pakistan assumes seat as non-permanent member of UNSC
Pakistan has assumed its seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council On January 1, 2012 for a
two-year term. This will be for the seventh time that Pakistan has assumed this position.
India: 15-nation UNSC should include 10 more members
Taking part in the 8th round of inter-governmental negotiations on UNSC reforms, India’s Permanent
Representative to the UN Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri held that the 15-nation UNSC should be
expanded to include about 10 more members and that a reformed UNSC, with expansion in the
permanent and non-permanent categories, will enhance the Council’s credibility and effectiveness in
dealing with global issues.
The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) urged the UN Security
Council (UNSC) to extend the Mission’s mandate by one year. The UNAMA’s
present mandate which is due to end on March 23, 2012 includes supporting the
Afghan government as well as providing technical assistance, helping reconstruction and development in the country
and working for human rights of Afghans.
