India readies to select mid-air refueler
India is gearing up to select the winner of the $2-billion tender for six mid-air refuelers for its air
force, with both the contending planes from European consortium EADS Airbus and Russian
Ilyushin clearing the flight trials. The Indian defence ministry is now considering the bids to arrive at
the lowest bidder in the tender issued in September 2010. India is looking for 6 refuelers. The tender
had been reissued by the government after the Airbus’ A330MRTT was selected by the Indian Air Force as the winner
of an earlier tender in 2009 but was later cancelled in January 2010 as the the finance ministry objected to the "high
cost" for the A330MRTT.

AI likely to induct Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ in May 2012
Air India may induct the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner by May 2012. The first of these planes is
likely to be inducted only in May 2012 after AI gets operational and technical certifications from
the US Federal Aviation Administration, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and other
agencies. Air India has ordered a total of 27 of these aircraft. The super-efficient Boeing-787
Dreamliner is set to make its debut at Hyderabad as part of Boeing’s commercial products
showcase at the 2012 India Aviation Airshow".
The delivery of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, built of composite materials which Boeing claims would assist considerably
reduce fuel consumption, has been delayed for almost 3 years for which Air India has sought a heavy compensation
from the manufacturing company. The government wants the compensation issue to be sorted out before Air India
starts inducting them.
Facing financial problem, Air India has resolved to sell and leaseback the first 7 of the 27 planes it has ordered and is
looking for bridge financing worth USD 230 million.Under leaseback arrangement, one party sells a property to a buyer
who immediately leases it back to the seller, allowing the initial buyer to make full use of the asset while not having
capital tied up in it.

Dassault Aviation bags India’s biggest ever military contract for
supplying combat aircrafts to Indian Air Force
 French firm Dassault Aviation bagged India’s biggest-ever military contract.
 This contract is for supplying 126 Rafale combat aircraft for the Air Force.
 Dassault Aviation edged out European rival EADS in getting the deal as it was declared the lowest bidder.
 Dassault Aviation will now get the contract, worth 10 billion dollars under India’s defence procurement
procedure.
 The companay will have to supply 18 of the 126 aircrafts to the IAF in 36 months from its facilities and the
remaining would be produced at HAL facilities in Bangalore.

Bureau of Civil Aviation Security sees Differently-abled people as threat
As per the regulations of the BCAS (Bureau of Civil Aviation Security) there is high likelihood of differently-abled
persons carrying weapons, explosives and other unsafe equipment with them, and thus there is
sufficient reason to be more alert and suspicious. As per an extract of the regulation by BCAS,
“Screeners should be thoroughly briefed that the possibility of carrying weapons/explosives and
other dangerous materials through such passengers is higher than a normal passenger and therefore,
these passengers need to be checked with care.” This was revealed by an RTI Application filed by
Disabled Rights Group (DRG) headed by activist Javed Abidi.
For this reason, the Disabled Rights Group (DRG) has depicted the resolution as disability numb and an abuse of the
human rights of persons with disability.
Some Indian Airlines have been recently abused of violation of the rights of the disabled passengers. For example,
recently, private carrier Spice-Jet forced Ms. Jeeja Ghosh, who suffered from cerebral palsy (she is also the head of
advocay and disability studies at the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy) to get off from a flight as they felt she was not
fit to fly.
The situation in U.S.A.
The U.S. in contrast to India has Transportation Security Administration (TSA) providing a devoted helpline to assist
passengers with disabilities. Travellers can call 72 hours before their travel for information about what to anticipate at
the screening.

IAF conferred best marching contingent award at R-Day parade
 The Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent has been named as the best marching contingent among the three services
at the Republic Day parade. The Border Security Force (BSF) contingent was awarded the prize for the best
marching contingent among the paramilitary forces and other auxiliary marching contingents.

 The awards for the best three Tableaux went to the Tableaux by Ministry of Human Resources Development
(Deptt of School Education & Literacy), the Goa Tableaux and the Tableaux for Karnataka. The award for best
children items went to the performance by Government Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Hastsal (KodiyanchaKarvan)
and that by the North Central Zone Cultural Centre at Allahabad (Gudum Baja of Madhya Pradesh).

Quick Facts: C-130J Super Hercules aircraft
 Bought recently from the United States.
 World’s most advanced and tactical aircraft.
 Primarily designed to support India’s special operations requirement.
 Equipped with an Infrared Detection Set (IDS), the aircraft can perform precision low-level flying, airdrops and
landing in blackout conditions.
 Self-protection systems and other features are included to ensure aircraft survivability in hostile air defense
environments. The aircraft also is equipped with air-to-air receiver refueling capability for extended range
operations.
 Ideally suited to India’s mission environment, which often involves operating out of austere, high-elevation
airstrips in hot conditions.
 Powered by four Rolls Royce AE2100 engines and Dowty six bladed props which provide the aircraft with
tremendous power.
 The aircraft has already demonstrated its responsiveness during the recent Sikkim earthquake where it

80 TH ANNIVERSARY FOR INADIAN AIR FORCE ON OCT 8 TH

India on 4 October 2012 successfully test fired its indigenously developed, nuclear-capable ballistic missile Prithvi-II from a test range in Odisha.

The missile was test fired by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha.

All the radars and electro-optical systems along the coast have monitored the missile throughout its flight path.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have developed Prithvi-II for the Indian Air Force for deep interdiction and the missile can be armed with a nuclear warhead weighing 500 kg. In this flight, it carried conventional explosives.

Prithvi-II is a user-friendly missile which has a completely guided trajectory. The SFC had earlier launched it on August 25, 2012 and the flight was successful. The Indian Army is already armed with the single-stage Prithvi-II, which uses liquid propellants.

From July 2012 onwards the Strategic Forces Command had launched a series of strategic missiles including Agni-I, Agni-II and Agni-III.

It is one of the five missiles that were developed under the country's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

Air India on 9 October 2012 got its third Boeing Dreamliner from the new North Charleston Facility of the American manufacturer. Air India is the first airline in the world to take delivery of a Dreamliner from the US Based manufacturer.

In September 2012, Air India took delivery of its first of the 27 Dreamliners on order. The aircraft is equipped with 18 business class seats and 238 in the economy class.

Air India has currently deployed the Dreamliners on domestic sector to familiarise the pilots with aircraft landings and takeoff procedures. The Boeing 787 fleets of airplane with unmatched efficiency and technology is going to help Air India turnaround plan.

The first commercial service of Dreamliner started from 19 September 2012 between New Delhi and Chennai, thereafter followed by New Delhi-Bangalore sector.

Dreamliner is the first commercial jet made primarily of advanced composite materials. It offers amazing passenger comfort features which includes cleaner air, higher humidity, bigger windows that dim electronically and more overhead storage space.
The aircraft's fuel efficiency is 20 per cent better than other airplanes in its class, which also results in 20 per cent lower carbon emissions.

About Boeing 787 Dreamliner

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-range, mid-size wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Its variants seat 210 to 290 passengers. It is the world's first major airliner to use composite materials for most of its construction. Boeing, 787 consumes 20% less fuel than the similarly-sized 767. Its distinguishing features include a four-panel windshield, noise-reducing chevrons on its engine nacelles, and a smoother nose contour. The 787 shares a common type rating with the larger 777 twinjet, allowing qualified pilots to operate both models, due to related design features.

India decided to purchase126 Rafale fighter aircraft from france
The Dassault Rafale  is a French twin-engine delta-wing fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation.
Introduced in 2000, the Rafale is being produced for both the French Air Force and for carrier-based operations in theFrench Navy. It has also been marketed for export to several countries, including selection by the Indian Air Force. The Rafale has been used in combat over Afghanistan and Libya; features such as the SPECTRA integrated defensive aids system have been crucial advantages in these theatres. Several upgrades to the radar, engines, and avionics of the Rafale are planned to be introduced in the near-future.
