Saraswati Samman

The Saraswati Samman  is an annual award for outstanding prose or poetry literary works in any Indian language listed in Schedule VIII of the Constitution of India. It is named after an Indian goddess of learning and is considered to be among the highest literary awards in India.The award consists of Rs 7.5 lakh, a citation and a plaque^[1]. The Saraswati Samman was instituted in 1991 by the K. K. Birla Foundation. Candidates are selected from literary works published in the previous ten years by a panel that included scholars and former award winners.

The samman/award was instituted in the year 1991 by KK Birla Foundation and is a prestigious award in the field of literature.

For the Saraswati Samman – 2011, Tamil writer Dr. A A Manavalan has been selected for his Tamil book on Ramayana
called, ‘Irama Kathaiyum Iramayakalum’ which is a comparative study of 48 Ramayanas in the different languages
including Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Tamil, Japanese, and Assamese.
The award carries money of 7.5 lakh rupees, a citation and a plaque.
The Saraswati Samman is prestigious literary honour in India, which is given by the K. K Birla Foundation.

The characters, plot and individual insertions of the book deals with the changes that happened in the due course of migration. This book has tried to come up with the effect of Ramayana over the South East Asia, its language and culture.

This book is a comparative study of Ramayana written in different languages over a certain period of time and some of the languages include Pali, Tibetan, Prakirt, Tamil, Japanese, Old Javanese, Assamese, Thai, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Sanskrit, Odisi, Hindi, Malay, Persian, Maranao, Burmese, Laotian and Kashmiri.
