‘Irina’ kills at least 65 in Madagascar
In Madagascar, many people have been killed in Tropical Storm Irina in
the South-East Ifanadiana district. Many people were also reported to
be missing in the mishap. In the South African city of Durban, beaches
were closed as waves reached 3m.
Irina was the second killer storm of the season. Madagascar is prone to
cyclones and tropical storms, especially in the rainy season from
February to May. In 2008,Cyclone Ivan smashed Madagascar, killing
more than 80 people and leaving over 200,000 homeless. In mid-
February 2012, another Tropical cyclone Giovanna killed 35 people.

Nigeria: 50 people killed in violence
 Approximately 50 people were killed south-eastern Nigeria in clashes between Ezza and Ezilo people of Ishielu district, the two groups that are often in conflict.





Jamaica to go republic
 Jamaica’s new Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, states that she intends to make the island country a republic by removing Queen Elizabeth as the head of state.
 She was speaking ahead of celebrations to mark 50 years of Jamaican independence from Britain..
 In her inaugural address, Ms Simpson Miller said the time has come for Jamaica to break with the British
monarchy and have its own president.
