Syria pullout deadline ends; violence continues
Albeit, the deadline for the Govt to pull out troops and heavy weapons from the protest
cities comes to end in Syria but still the UN special envoy Kofi Annan’s peace mission to
Syria does not seem to have made much progress as violence activities still continue.
As the deadline ended, the UN secretary General Ban Ki Moon made a final plea before
Syrian President Bashar Al Assad to cease all military actions against civilians and satisfy its allegiances. Both
Government and opposition rebels were required to stop the violence, but the Syrian regimen put up eleventh hour
conditions that opposition groups must make a written guarantee that they would lay down their arms.
Syria: Draft agreement signed
Syrian opposition groups have signed a draft agreement which charts a democratic transition, should President
Bashar al-Assad leave office.
Representatives from the two main opposition groups, the Syrian National Council and the National Coordination
Body for Democratic Change in Syria, say their draft agreement has been signed in Cairo.
The two sides reject any military intervention that harms the sovereignty or stability of the country, though Arab
intervention is not considered foreign.
