13 Somali Pirates captured in Indian Ocean
The British Navy captures 13 Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.
As per the information released by British Ministry of Defence, RFA Fort Victoria and a US Navy vessel
intercepted the pirates’ boat, which had refused to stop despite warning shots from a Royal Navy helicopter.
Abdi Farah Shirdon Said has been chosen as the new Prime Minister
of Somalia. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who was recently
chosen by parliament in a UN-backed process, selected his close
ally Shirdon to the powerful position.
This event is one of the first major steps of the new administration,
which brought to an end the eight years of transitional rule by the
corruption imbued and Western supported government. After more
than two decades of anarchy and war, Somalia's capital Mogadishu has been
resurrecting since the Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents left frontline fighting
positions.
Somali pirates seize Iranian cargo ship off Maldives
An Iranian-owned cargo ship MV Eglantine with its 23 crew members seized by Pirates near the
Maldives. Maldives defence officials held that this was the first time when Somali pirates have taken a
ship in its waters. In late years Somali pirates have expanded the reach of their operations right across
the Indian Ocean.
20 Indians held hostages by Somali Pirates rescued by NATO
As per a NATO statement, the NATO warships have freed 20 Indians held hostage by Somali pirates off the Horn of Africa.
Nine Pakistanis and five Iranians have also been rescued from the pirates.
The NATO said that US warship, USS Carney, intercepted the Indian-flagged dhow Al-Qashmi off the
southwestern coast of Oman and freed its 20 Indian crew members on January 6-7, 2012.
