In Manipur, Ningol Chakouba festival is being celebrated with cultural gusto and
traditional flavour. In this festival, married women visit their parental home in their
customary attire and dine together with their parents, brothers and sisters. After that,
they receive gifts from their parents and brothers. In return, they wish their parents
and brothers a happy and prosperous life in the years to come. The festival is also
organized by many civil society organizations . Women of various communities are
participating in the celebration. The festival is also celebrated at Manipuri pockets of
other North- Eastern states.

Irom Sharmila ‘Iron Lady of Manipur’ completes 12 years fast

The ‘Iron Lady of Manipur’ Irom Chanu Sharmila.

Ms Sharmila has been on a hunger strike since 2000. She completed 12 years of her fast. She has been demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) which the human rights activists hold as a draconian law.

Sharmila, a civil rights activist, began her hunger strike after the death of 10 people in an alleged encounter with the Assam Rifles at Malom valley in Imphal on November 2, 2000. At present, she is in judicial custody where she is forcibly fed through her nose.

Ibobi Singh sworn in as chief minister of Manipur
