Ancient human ancestor had feet like an ape
As per the journal “Nature”, Scientists have unearthed fossilized bones of a foot in Ethiopia which as per them could be
of a new species of human relative that roamed on the Earth some 3.4 million years
ago. The fossil discovered in Ethiopia suggests that humans’ prehistoric relatives may
have lived in the trees for a million years longer than was previously thought. The
shape of the bones shows that the creature could walk upright at times. Like the more
famous "Lucy" skeleton – which was first identified in the Afar in the 1970s – it walked upright, but had a grasping foot
that it used to climb tree branches. The fossils consisting eight elements from the forefoot were unearthed in 2009 in
the remote Afar region of Ethiopia, about 48km north of where Lucy was discovered in 1974.
What may be the Significance of this discovery?
