Our country has long romance with almost all kinds of arts. The vast scope of the art of India intertwines with the cultural history, religions and philosophies which place art production and patronage in social and cultural contexts. Apart from the performing arts such as music, dance and drama, we have a kaleidoscope of visual arts such as architecture, sculpture, and painting. Whatever may be the art form, it brings to our mind a multitude of sensations through taste, emotion, and delight. The common word used for these sensations is called Rasa. In primary sense, Rasa means the sap or juice of plants and refers to the extract or fluid. However, in secondary sense Rasa refers to the non material essence of a thing. The nonmaterial essence is just the finest part of multitude of senses. The Rasa is the soul in a body of art. Like the taste of a sweet or smell of a perfume can be experienced, the Rasa is the aesthetic experience in context with the arts. When
it gives pleasure, it becomes Ananda or bliss. A whole gamut of our ancient Rishis and scholars beginning from Bharata to the eleventh century, Abhinava Gupta of Kashmir, Rasa has been theorized, developed, and commented upon.
Eight Rasas
Based upon the content of art, the multitude of sentiment, mood, or emotion led the the development of Eight Rasa System. The Natyasastra identifies eight Rasas with eight corresponding Sthayi Bhava (mood):
The above Rasas are depicted in the amorous sentiment in all Indian art—visual, performing, and literary.
On the upper level, Rasa takes metaphysical dimension and has been described as the joy resulting from an indescribable aesthetic experience. In such case, it has been called alaukika (otherworldly) and chamatkara (wondrous). A ninth Rasa called "Santam" based on the mood of equanimity and tranquillity, in which the knowledge of one’s soul forms the fulcrum, got developed during the times of Abhinava Gupta. In addition to the nine Rasas, two more appeared later in texts called VÄtsalya Rasa (Parental Love) and Bhakti Rasa (Spiritual Devotion).
The earliest extant text that deals with Indian arts is Bharata's Natyasastra (Science of Dance), which seems to be 1700 to 2200 years old. It was concerned with dramaturgy, dance and music.
Akka Mahadevi
Akka Mahadevi was a prominent saint of the Veerashaiva Bhakti movement of the 12th century in Karnataka. She was born in Udutadi, Karnataka. A household name in Karnataka, she had said that she was a woman only in name and that her mind, body and soul belonged to Lord Shiva. Thus, she became
enamoured of Shiva’s icon in the village shrine when she was a young girl. She accepted the god
Shiva ('Chenna Mallikarjuna') as her husband, traditionally understood as the 'madhura bhava' or
'madhurya' form of devotion. This affection of Akka Mahadevi is similar to the charm of Meera of
Rajsathan and Andal of Tamil Nadu, the only female Alvar of the 12 Alvar saints of South India.
Akka Mahadevi is known for having composed about 350 vacanas or Vachanas (spoken free verse
hymns) in Kannada. The vacanas are scripture for the Virasaiva sect, which does not accept Sanskrit Vedas. The saints of this sect were called Saranas and Akka Mahadevi was the first female sarana, and about fifty other women yogis
