1983
The Internet, a revolutionary and cheap communications system that has
transformed the lives of billions of people across the world, turned 30 on January 1,
2013. The computer network officially began its technological revolution when it fully
substituted previous networking systems on January 1 1983. Known as “flag day”, it
was the first time the US Department of Defence (DoD) — commissioned Arpanet
network fully switched to use of the Internet protocol suite (IPS) communications
system. Using data “packet-switching”, the new method of linking computers paved
the way for the arrival of the World Wide Web.

Titan
A computer called Titan, which is 10 times more powerful than the last lab machine,
has claimed the title of the world's most powerful supercomputer. Titan uses
microchips more usually used for video-gaming to crunch numbers for climate
studies, models of advanced materials and alternatives to petrol. The machine has
seized the top spot in the Top500 – a closely-watched global league of the fastest
supercomputers. Built by Cray at the US government's Oak Ridge National
Laboratory in Tennessee, Titan is 10 times more powerful than the lab's last
supercomputer, Jaguar, which led the world as recently as 2009. Titan was
measured at 17.59 petaflops or 17.59 thousand trillion calculations per second
beating the previous record of 16.32 petaflops, held by Sequoia, a supercomputer at

[B]IBM
[C]Intel
[D]AMD
IBM
IBM scientists are reporting progress in a chip-making technology that is likely to
ensure the shrinking of the basic digital switch at the heart of modern microchips for
more than another decade. The advance is based on carbon nanotubes, exotic
molecules that have long held out promise as an alternative material to silicon from
which to create the tiny logic gates that are now used by the billions to create
microprocessors and memory chips. The IBM researchers have been able to
pattern an array of carbon nanotubes on the surface of a silicon wafer and use them
to build chips that are hybrids of silicon and carbon nanotubes with more than
10,000 working transistors

Micro Blogging Site Twitter Launched New Email sharing Feature for Tweets
Micro Blogging site Twitter on 15 November 2012 launched a new service for Email Sharing of Tweets also known by one-to-many text messaging service.
The new email service is now going to allow users to share their favorite Tweets via email. The Company is giving users the ability to share tweets beyond their list of followers on the social media site.
Now,with the help of new service you can retweet any (Twitter messages) to your Twitter followers, but sometimes if you want to share with another group, like your college roommates or your parents or a friend who isn't yet on Twitter, You can simply do it with the help of this brand new service.
Suppose if you want to email a tweet click on the “more” icon next to the reply, retweet and favourite buttons in order to email a tweet to anyone you know. As per Twitter, you can add your own comment, and it’ll send an email with your comment and the tweet together.
Mobile Twitter users already had an access to this features that to for some time. But making it available on the web only makes sense, it means that instead of two slightly different Twitter experiences, we’re that much closer to the ideal of one social network, one experience.
With this, Twitter also revealed that it is going to make available photos, videos and news sharing service on it to top of the search feed.
Also, Twitter had made an update of applications for iPhone and Android to improve search results and highlight photos, videos and news shared at the service.

Chips made of Carbon Nanotubes to replace silicon chips soon
November 14th, 2012
Researchers have developed a new technique to mass produce much tinier and faster carbon nanotubes that can replace silicon chips in computers. It could be possible to replace silicon with carbon nanotubes in manufacturing computer chips. It use would make the size of the computing components much smaller.
What are carbon nanotubes? What are the applications of carbon nanotubes?
- Carbon nanotubes are allotropes of carbon (like diamond, graphite, grapheme etc.) with a cylindrical nanostructure.
- Nanotubes have been constructed with length-to-diameter ratio of up to 132,000,000:1, considerably larger than for any other material.
- They have unusual properties, which are valuable for nanotechnology, electronics, optics and other fields of materials science and technology.
- In particular, owing to their extraordinary thermal conductivity and mechanical and electrical properties, carbon nanotubes find applications as additives to various structural materials. For example, nanotubes form only a tiny part of the material(s) in (primarily carbon fiber) baseball bats, golf clubs, or car components.

Shamoon virus
US government agencies have alleged that Iran orchestrated the “shamoon” virus
that disabled tens of thousands of computers at Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest
oil company and struck Qatari natural gas firm RasGas as well. US said that Iran
likely launched the attack in retaliation for US-led sanctions over its nuclear program
and a cyber sabotage campaign reportedly backed by Washington. Where as
Iranian officials denied any role in recent cyberattacks. The "shamoon"virus can
spread through networked computers and ultimately wipes out files by overwriting
them.

A generic top-level domain (gTLD) is one of the categories of top-level domains (TLDs) maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for use in the Domain Name System of the Internet. It is visible to Internet users as the suffix at the end of a domain name.
Overall, IANA currently distinguishes the following groups of top-level domains:[1]
- infrastructure top-level domain (arpa)
- country code top-level domains (ccTLD)
- internationalized top-level domains (IDNs)
- internationalized country code top-level domains
- testing top-level domains
- generic top-level domains (gTLD)
The core group of generic top-level domains consists of the com, info, net, and org domains. In addition, the domainsbiz, name, and pro are also considered generic; however, these are designated as restricted, because registrations within them require proof of eligibility within the guidelines set for each.
Historically, the group of generic top-level domains included domains, created in the early development of the domain name system, that are now sponsored by designated agencies or organizations and are restricted to specific types of registrants. Thus, domains edu, gov, int, and mil are now considered sponsored top-level domains, much like the many newly created themed domain names (e.g., jobs). The entire group of domains that do not have a geographic or country designation (see country-code top-level domain) is still often referred to by the term generic TLDs.

FLAME
Iran
reported substantial damage and huge data lost due to malicious software dubbed
as Flame. It could be 3rd most powerful virus after Stuxnet
and Duqu viruses. Largest number of infected machines is in Iran, followed
by the Israel/Palestine, then Sudan and Syria.
What is Flame?
Flame is a
complex data stealing Virus that contains about 20 times as much code as Stuxnet about and
about 100 times as much code as a typical virus designed to steal financial information.
What is the potential of Flame?
Flame is
capable of:
gathering
data files
remotely
change settings on computers
turn on PC
microphones to record conversations
take
screen shots
log
instant messaging chats
Thus it
can steal sophisticated data from computers by exploiting flaws in the Windows
O/S.
What are Stuxnet and Duqu?
Stuxnet: A computer worm. Basically
spies on and subverts industrial
systems.
It is notorious for attacking and damaging centrifuges of an Iranian uranium
enrichment facility in 2010.
Duqu: Also a computer worm which is often
related to the Stuxnet. It was named “Duqu” as it gives prefix "~DQ"
to the names of files it creates.
To
understand the potential of FLAME more, lets see the 5 Dimensions of FLAME:-
1.
Complexity
2. Breadth
3. Network
4. Victims
5.
Perpetrator
Complexity:
One of the
most complicated pieces of malicious software ever discovered. Nearly 20 times
as much code than Stuxnet.
Built with
some 20 modules which even the researchers can’t fully
understand.
Breadth:
Most
complete data-stealing tools found to date.
Can record
sounds, access Bluetooth communications, capture regular
screenshot
images and log Internet Messaging conversations.
Network:
A network
of over 80 servers across the world used by the FLAME creators to
remotely
access infected machines.
Can change
settings on PC
Can
quietly gather the stolen data
Largest
such Command and Control network identified to date.
Victims:
Most
number of infected infected systems found in Iran, followed by Israel and the
Palestinian territories.
Also found
in Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Estimated
1,000-5,000 machines infected worldwide.
Perpetrator:
Kaspersky
Lab, which claimed credit for uncovering Flame, believes the virus may be the
work of the same nation or nations that built the Stuxnet worm that attacked
Iran's nuclear program in 2010. But the Kaspersky researchers declined to say
which nation or nations they believe are behind Flame.
Why the needle of suspicion points towards the same nation states
that build Stuxnet?
Actually,
the creators of Stuxnet and Flame employed similar techniques to infect computers,
which suggests that they were "parallel" projects backed by the same nation
state.
