Shiva Thapa becomes youngest Indian boxer to make cut for Olympics

The 18-year old Assam’s Shiva Thapa (56kg) has become the youngest Indian boxer to make the cut for
the Olympics. In Astana, Kazakhstan, he defeated Japan’s Satoshi Simizu to enter the final and book
himself a London berth.














Asian Boxing Championships: Mary Kom, Sarita clinch gold medals
Mary Kom (Five-time world champion) and Sarita Devi clinched gold medals in the 6th Asian Boxing
Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, helping India finish a creditable second in the overall
standings. Whilst Mary Kom overcame current world champion and Asian Games gold medallist Ren
Cancan of China 14/8 in the 51kg category, Sarita Devi in 60kg category, overcame Chorieva Mavzuna
of Tajkistan 16-9. With 2 gold medals, 4 silver and two bronze, India finished runners-up behind China.




Indian Boxer Vijender Singh qualifies for London Olympics
Vijender Singh of India qualified for the London Olympics in the 75 kg category by reaching the semifinal
of the Asian Olympic qualifier, at Astana in Kajakhstan. Vijender Singh is the first Indian boxer to
qualify for the Olympics for the third time in succession.






The boxing Champion, Muhammad Ali who retired from the game in the year 1981 was honoured with Liberty Medal in Philadelphia on 13 September 2012. The boxer who has been battling with Parkinson disease for the past 30 years was awarded with the honor for his contribution towards the humanitarian causes like religious freedom and civil rights.  
National Constitution Center of the United States administers the Liberty Medal and presents the honuor of this medal to the leaders who fight in pursuit of freedom. Muhammad Ali, who was born as Cassius Marcellus Clay changed his name to be Muhammad Ali after converting himself into Isalm in the year 1964. He won the world heavyweight title three times and is nicknamed as The Greatest. In the year 1999, BBC crowned Ali, with the title; Sports Personality of the Century and Sports illustrated crowned him with the title of Sportsman of the century.
