Aiming to be the first State in the country to provide ‘pucca’ houses to all its citizens,
the Sikkim Government launched a Rs 211 crore ‘social housing’ project. Under the
project, housing will be provided to around 30, 000 people residing in ‘kutcha’
houses as on January 1, 2011, an official release said.In its first phase, the project,
named the ‘Chief Minister’s Rural Housing Mission’, will allocate around 6,000
single-storey earthquake-resistant ‘pucca’ houses free of cost by 2013 to the
poo.The 6,000 ‘kutcha’ house dwellers have been identified through a baseline
survey conducted by gram sabhas, followed by multiple levels of supervision and
cross-checks by the rural management and development department.
Sikkim gets a Biotechnology park
The Union Science and Technology Ministry sanctioned a biotechnology park for Sikkim. The park will be established at
Pakyong in East districta @ cost of Rs 5 crore. It will be endowed with all facilities including research centre at regional
level for NE States.

28% population of Sikkim lives in urban areas: State Census-2011
As per the State Census 2011, released by the State Directorate of Census Operations in Gangtok, in Sikkim 28% of the
population lives in urban areas. It held that Sikkim has made a significant progress, bringing more prosperity to its
people and the condition of the houses, the quality of their life style , facilities like safe drinking, modes of transport
and communication along with use of LPG fuel and electricity, even in the remote villages, have increased manifolds.
There are still 13% Households in the state having no toilet facility.
Sikkim Rail Project
The government has clarified that the Rs. 1340 crore rail project connecting Rangpo in Sikkim to the rest of the
country via Sevoke in West Bengal is expected to be completed by 2015. This rail connection would be the first
step towards linking the capital of the small and landlocked border state of Sikkim to other parts of the nation.
