Punjab mass cremation:NHRC recommends monetary compensation

NHRC (The National Human Rights Commission) has advocated Rs 27.94 Crore rupees as monetary relief to the families
of 1,513 people who were killed and cremated during militancy period in Punjab (1984-
1994). The proposal comes after NHRC’s investigation into Punjab Mass Cremation case in
which there were illegal killings and disappearances of persons culminated in the cremation of 2,097 bodies in
Amritsar, Majitha and Tarn Taran districts during 1984-1994. Of the 2,097 cases, only 1,513 could be identified. The
NHRC has advocated the monetary relief to the next of kin of 1,513 dead whose bodies could be identified out of cases
of unidentified 2,097 bodies which were held over to the Commission by the Supreme Court.
PM inaugurates “Guru Gobind Singh Refinery” in Bathinda
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh inaugurates the “Guru Gobind Singh Refinery” at Bathinda
in Punjab.
Guru Gobind Singh Refinery (GGSR) is a refinery owned by Hindustan Mittal Energy
Limited (HMEL) a joint venture between HPCL and Mittal Energy Limited, a company
owned by L N Mittal. It is located in village Phulokheri, Bhatinda, Punjab, India.
Punjab bans use of dangerous pesticides
Responding to National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) directions, the Punjab Government has:
Banned the manufacture, import and use of pesticides which are harmful to health.
Withdrawn registration of some such pesticides in addition to limiting use of some unsafe pesticides.
Made arrangements for educating farmers on judicious use of pesticides and their healthcare.
Why this action was taken by the Punjab Government?
These actions have been taken by state government in response to National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC’s) suo
motu cognizance of a media report which held that the disease of cancer among farmers in the Malwa region of
Punjab is caused by the excessive use of pesticides.
Prakash Singh Badal: Punjab’s CM
For a record 5th time Prakash Singh Badal will be sworn in as Punjab Chief Minister. He was elected leader of the
Shiromani Akali Dal Legislature Party. Governor Shivraj Patil dissolved the 13th Punjab Assembly to pave the way for the
formation of the 14th Assembly.
