Nelson Mandela bank notes launched by South Africa

November 9th, 2012
The South African government had earlier declared the launch of new bank notes on the 22nd anniversary of Mandela’s release from prison after serving 27 years for his opposition to white-minority rule.
The living legend ‘Nelson Mandela’ popularly known by his clan name "Madiba" became South Africa’s first black president in 1994. He rarely appears in public now but is still respected both at home and abroad and held up as a symbol of freedom, human rights and democracy.
The new currency notes also feature South Africa’s "big five" wild animals –
  1. Rhino
  2. Elephant
  3. Lion
  4. Buffalo
  5. Leopard
The new currency notes will be used in co-occurrence with the existent currency, which will be progressively phased out.
