Sri Lanka accuses US of adopting double standards
Sri Lanka accused US of following double standards by citing US’s close friend Israel’s decision to
dissolve ties with the UNHRC. Sri Lanka alleged that US was against any global involvement in the
Jewish state (Israel) but did not follow the same policy for Colombo (Sri Lanka).
Sri Lanka held that in spite of losing the vote (against it) 36 to 1 Israel cut off links with UNHRC
and only US backed Israel. Israel has decided that UNHRC mission would not be granted permission to enter the
country.
While in case of Sri Lanka, a few days ago, the US moved resolution which had sought to commit Sri Lanka for
expeditious implementation of the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) was
adopted by 24-15 with 8 abstentions. Sri Lanka baulked the move to present the resolution laying claim that it was a
biased action by US to prop up the pro-LTTE Diaspora.
Menik Farm IDP camps to be closed in next two months: Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan authorities informed Indian joint parliamentary delegation that the Menik Farms camps will be closed in
the next two months as the government here are hoping to resettle the last of the war displaced civilians by June
2012. Indian joint parliamentary delegation, led by Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, visited the camp on
Wednesday morning for a first-hand study of the situation there.
What are Menik Farm Camps?
Menik Farm Welfare Centre was set up in 2009 for the war-displaced Tamils of the Northern Province in Sri Lanka.
They are largest refugee camp in over 40 years in South Asia.
The Menik Farm IDP camp once accommodated close to 3 lakh Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). About 6,000 IDPs
remain in the camp, about 300 km from Colombo. Most of the IDPs hail from the mine-contaminated areas of the
adjoining Mullaitivu district, where the government forces wiped out the Tamil Tigers in May 2009. The Sri Lankan
government hopes to complete the demining process in the Mullaithivu area in the next two months after which the
remaining IDPs will be sent back to places where they belong.
The IDPs primarily raised two issues with the Indian delegation:
Housing: These IDPs are not entitled to the 50,000 houses that India is assisting in building in Sri Lanka, nor are
they part of any other scheme.
Job/Means of Livelihood: Finding a job is a problem for IDPs. The troubles get intensified as the Army is
elaborately involved in economic activity in the North.
