Anonymous bidder bought two letters of Mahatma Gandhi as well as rare copy of Indian constitution at Sotheby's sale in London on 12 December 2012. The bidder bought letter which was written by Gandhi in 1922 to eldest brother of Rabindranath Tagore, Dwijendranath at 7 times the value of its pre-sale estimate. The rare copy of Indian constitution was sold at around 8 times the offer price to private collector.
The constitution copy was bought by the private collector, while the two letters which were associated to Gandhi were bought by an anonymous buyer.
The letter which was written by Mahatma Gandhi to Dwijendranath from the Sabarmati jail brought back 49250 pounds (around 43 lakh Rupees) at Sotheby's sale of Children’s Books, History, English Literature as well as Illustrations. There was an estimate of 5000-7000 pounds.
In the letter, Mahatma Gandhi wrote that the calm and peace in India was important for his own strength. He had asked Dwijendranath to send this supporting message to Young-India journal in two pages letter which was written in pencil.
There was another letter written by Gandhi to unknown friend in 1922 in which he had offered condolences after hearing about the death of his friend’s mother. This letter was sold for 5625 pounds. The estimated amount of this letter was 3000-4000 pounds.
It is important to note that in November 2012, the Gandhian author Giriraj Kishore had gone to UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi in order to put a halt to the auction of these two letters written by Gandhi.
On the other hand, the first limited edition of constitution on the stiff Whatman paper having an estimate amount of 4000-5000 pounds was sold for 39650 pounds. This copy of constitution is signed by the President Rajendra Prasad in English as well as Devnagari, along with Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru on authentification page.

Pakistan releases Surjeet Singh
Pakistan freed Indian prisoner Surjeet Singh who has served a life term following his arrest on
charges of spying in the 1980s.
Singh was freed from Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Surjit Singh was arrested by Pakistani police on allegations of spying during the rule of military ruler Zia-ul-Haq.Initially, Singh was awarded the death sentence under the Pakistan Army Act in 1985. Later, in 1989, the death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
Jawahar Thakur appointed as the new CGA (Controller General of Accounts) with effect from July

Gowda started as a painter, but began making sculpture in response to events like Bombay riots and inequalities in India’s growth story. One of Gowda’s most well-known works is an ash sculpture titled Collateral which was made by burning incense on mesh frames to produce a landscape that looks ravaged by war. A piece she created for the 2009 Venice Biennale was made with hair collected from Tirupati.
Her sculptures and installations combines formal language of western sculptures with an exploration of how materials can make specific reference to social and cultural context of India.

Works of Shortlisted Artists to be showcased
The National Museum of Art in Wales will showcase for 14-weeks beginning 6 October 2012 works by the seven artists shortlisted for the prize sponsored by Bank of America Merrill Lynch as part of its Arts and Culture Programme, and publicly funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Cardiff Council.
An international judging panel will award the 40,000 pound prize midway through the exhibition in November 2012.
All other shortlisted artists will receive a new award of 4000 pounds each. Also, a new partnership with Mostyn, the contemporary gallery in North Wales, will facilitate the shortlisted artists present a solo show in the 2013.

Grass with Gandhi`s blood sold at £10,000 in an auction in London

A pinch of soil and blood-stained blades of grass from the place where Mahatma Gandhi was
assassinated in 1948 was sold for £10,000 at an auction in London. The auction also saw many
other Gandhi memorabilia going under the hammer. In all, the Gandhiji-related items fetched
over £100,000 pounds in the auction by the Shropshire-based auctioneer, Mullock’s.
The memorabilia included a pair of Gandhiji’s round-rimmed glasses, charkha, a 10 inch 78 rpm Columbia disc of
Gandhiji giving his spiritual message signed by him, and original photographs of Gandhiji visiting London in 1931. The
pair of Gandhiji’s glasses had a guide price of £10,000 but sold for £34,000.
Gandhiji’s glasses were bought in London around 1890 when he studied Law.

R N Choubey: New head of DGH

What is the controversy related to Rajat Gupta?
In 2007 when Gupta was serving as Director of Goldman Sachs, he leaked confidential information about the
company’s investment plan and earning details, which are considered Non-Public information, to Raj Rajaratnam. He
leaked the information of $ 5 billion investment which was to be made by Berkshire Hathaway into Goldman Sachs.
Rajaratnam traded on the information and made profits. It is alleged that Gupta also had some vested interest in
Rajaratnam company- Galleon and he also got some benefits through that trading which is considered as Insider
Trading- a corporate crime. It is also alleged that Gupta passed on non- public info about Procter & Gamble to
Rajaratnam where he leaked info about company’s sale of its assets worth $ 3 billion and about its quarterly earnings
which were not made public.

Autar Kaw, a professor of Indian Origin won US Professor of the Year Award-2012

Pakistan releases Surjeet Singh
Pakistan freed Indian prisoner Surjeet Singh who has served a life term following his arrest on
charges of spying in the 1980s.
Singh was freed from Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Indian team present at Wagah will receive over 300 fishermen being repatriated.
Surjit Singh was arrested by Pakistani police on allegations of spying during the rule of military ruler Zia-ul-Haq.Initially, Singh was awarded the death sentence under the Pakistan Army Act in 1985. Later, in 1989, the death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
Jawahar Thakur appointed as the new CGA (Controller General of Accounts) with effect from July
1, 2012.

Akhlaq Mohammed Khan (16 June
1936 – 13 February 2012), who wrote under the pen name Shahryar, was an Indian
academician, and a doyen of Urdu poetry in India. As a Hindi film lyricist, he
is best known for his lyrics in Gaman (1978), Umrao Jaan (1981) and Anjuman
(1986), by Muzaffar Ali. In 2008 he won the Jnanpith Award, which is the
highest literary award in India.
He was awarded the 1987 Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu for his poetry
collection, Khwab Ka Dar Band Hai. He has been widely acknowledged as the finest exponent of Modern Urdu
Poetry.

Bangalore artist Sheela Gowda, who uses unconventional materials like cow dung, ash and hair to make sculptures was shortlisted for UK’s biggest contemporary art prize, the 40000 pounds Artes Mundi. Gowda is among seven artists chosen from over 750 nominations from around 90 countries.
Gowda started as a painter, but began making sculpture in response to events like Bombay riots and inequalities in India’s growth story. One of Gowda’s most well-known works is an ash sculpture titled Collateral which was made by burning incense on mesh frames to produce a landscape that looks ravaged by war. A piece she created for the 2009 Venice Biennale was made with hair collected from Tirupati.
Her sculptures and installations combines formal language of western sculptures with an exploration of how materials can make specific reference to social and cultural context of India.
Other Shortlisted artists
Miriam Backstrom (Sweden), Tania Bruguera (Cuba), Phil Collins (England), Teresa Margolles (Mexico), Darius Mikssys (Lithuania) and Apolonija Sustersic (Slovenia) are the other shortlisted artists for the fifth edition of Artes Mundi.
The shortlist was drawn up by Sofia Hernandez Chong Cuy, curator of contemporary art at Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, New York, and Anders Kreuger, curator at M HKA in Antwerp, Belgium.

Works of Shortlisted Artists to be showcased
The National Museum of Art in Wales will showcase for 14-weeks beginning 6 October 2012 works by the seven artists shortlisted for the prize sponsored by Bank of America Merrill Lynch as part of its Arts and Culture Programme, and publicly funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Cardiff Council.
An international judging panel will award the 40,000 pound prize midway through the exhibition in November 2012.
All other shortlisted artists will receive a new award of 4000 pounds each. Also, a new partnership with Mostyn, the contemporary gallery in North Wales, will facilitate the shortlisted artists present a solo show in the 2013.

Grass with Gandhi`s blood sold at £10,000 in an auction in London

A pinch of soil and blood-stained blades of grass from the place where Mahatma Gandhi was
assassinated in 1948 was sold for £10,000 at an auction in London. The auction also saw many
other Gandhi memorabilia going under the hammer. In all, the Gandhiji-related items fetched
over £100,000 pounds in the auction by the Shropshire-based auctioneer, Mullock’s.
The memorabilia included a pair of Gandhiji’s round-rimmed glasses, charkha, a 10 inch 78 rpm Columbia disc of
Gandhiji giving his spiritual message signed by him, and original photographs of Gandhiji visiting London in 1931. The
pair of Gandhiji’s glasses had a guide price of £10,000 but sold for £34,000.
Gandhiji’s glasses were bought in London around 1890 when he studied Law.

What is the controversy related to Rajat Gupta?
In 2007 when Gupta was serving as Director of Goldman Sachs, he leaked confidential information about the
company’s investment plan and earning details, which are considered Non-Public information, to Raj Rajaratnam. He
leaked the information of $ 5 billion investment which was to be made by Berkshire Hathaway into Goldman Sachs.
Rajaratnam traded on the information and made profits. It is alleged that Gupta also had some vested interest in
Rajaratnam company- Galleon and he also got some benefits through that trading which is considered as Insider
Trading- a corporate crime. It is also alleged that Gupta passed on non- public info about Procter & Gamble to
Rajaratnam where he leaked info about company’s sale of its assets worth $ 3 billion and about its quarterly earnings
which were not made public.

The patent is titled ‘High Capacity Non-Viral Vectors.’ The nano-particles act as non- viral vectors.
