Recently Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz was injured in the arm
when a military patrol mistakenly opened fire on the presidential convoy. Abdelaziz
came to power in a military coup in 2008 in the West African nation. He has led a
military campaign against al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), al-Qaeda’s
franchise in North Africa and has been the subject of several failed assassination
attempts by AQIM.
